Can my horse eat straw?
All my horses have been chewing on the wood recently and they are tearing everything down. We worked hard building it all summer and of course horses do what they do best. I was wondering if I could throw a couple straw bales in the pasture so they chew on those instead of the wood? We feed our horses alfalfa/grass twice a day. Would they get colic or bloat if we did this?
I’ve seen some people throw in big round bales in with their horses so they stop chewing on the wood but I would like to know if it is safe or not.
And, I’ve tried everything I can think of to put stuff on the wood, but the foal and stud chew right through it.
Eating straw is very bad for their digestion and can cause them to colic. It has not nutritional value I know we make sure that when the foaling mares are in straw they have lots of hay to eat. We also installed boredom toys. Toklat.com makes many that keep them occupied.
For the wood eating this is going to sound really strange but we put hot sauce on the wood especially where they have already chewed. Let it dry then put a layer of vics vapor rub on top not super thick. They will hate it.
#1 Choice for wood chewing: There used to be the best product called McNasty but it is hard to find here is an online link http://www.equinenow.com/store-item-5394. It is a miracle like pepper spray for good. If you find it make sure you don’t put it on in a windy day and cover your mouth with your shirt. I am serious when I tell you it is like pepper spray. I usually apply a couple sprays a week.
We also put aluminum channel(Home Depot) up. On all of the exposed corners we used L Channel and 2×4′s we used u channel. It has saved my barn I don’t have to replace wood each year.
Hope this helps
