foal rejection
what is a maiden mare ?

i was reading this thing online about foal birthing and it said that occasionally a mare will reject her foal and that rejection is more common in maiden mares. and i have never herd the term maiden mare..

In the context in which you read the term, it means a mare that has never given birth to a foal before. Some mares that are foaling for the first time will violently reject their foals, to the point where the foal has to be taken away from her to avoid having her injure or kill it. This is most common for fillies and mares that haven’t spent much time in the company of other horses– typically fillies and mares that have never run loose in a herd of any sort.

A maiden, used in the context of mares that are to be bred, also means a mare that has never been mated before. It has a legal status: if a mare has been bred, failed to get in foal or lost the pregnancy, calling her a “maiden” is a misrepresentation of her breeding status and cause for rescinding a sale. Only a mare that has never been bred is a maiden.

In the context of racing, a maiden is a horse that has never won a race, regardless of gender. A colt, gelding or filly could equally be referred to as a maiden.
