First and foremost, you should know that horses are herd animals. And herds usually have a leader in their group. In a herd of horse, a stallion is usually the leader. But the one that chooses which direction to go is the lead mare. Between you and your horse, you should be the lead mare and your horse should be the stallion, regardless of gender.

You have to know that horses are naturally scared of people and other animals. At first, these magnificent beasts will show their distrust. What you should do is to make them trust you.
