Do not get a foal as your first horse. It is a nice idea that you will be able to grow to have a special bond if you get a foal, but reality is that when buying a foal you do not know what you are getting into. You wont know what it will be like when it is grown up for one thing, also keep in mind you will have about 3 years before you can even ride it. You may buy a horse as a foal then have it grow up to have a grumpy temper, or have health issues. Buying an older horse is a way to make sure you get a horse that has the right temperment aswell as training for you. Foals also need a TON of handeling by experianced horse people to grow up to be well mannered, and safe. Horses are not born with training. Keep in mind training expenses of when it comes time to break out your baby. Chances are you will not be able to break it out safely with out the help of a trainer. (I have been riding 18 years, and just got my first unbroke prospect. I am now paying 625 dollars a month to get help with breaking him out as he turned out to be too high strung to safely work with him alone.)
Buy a horse that is at least 6 years old (I think 10-15 is ideal for first horses), but still young enough that it doesn’t have health issues. This way you can get a horse that has a temperment you like, training that you need and no unknowns about what it will turn out to be. Bring an experianced horse person along when you go look at horses, get a pre purchase exam done by a reputable vet (NEVER use the seller’s vet to do a pre purchase exam). Make sure you get a horse from a reputable seller, and always be skeptical of people when they are selling horses, many horse sellers will take advantage of a first time buyer. Many older horses will bond with their new rider just the same as they would if you owned them from birth, it just depends on their temperment. Each individual horse will be different.

By getting an older horse you will have a lot of oppertunity to learn from it, and decide what your goals are for riding. After you know what your goals are, or you feel like you have learned all you can from your first horse, then it is time to move on to a younger horse. If you get a foal, you will have 3 years before you can start riding it, alot will change in 3 years, including your equestrian goals.

Books are not the best way to learn, they dont give you any practical, hands on experiance. You need to spend some time at a stable handeling foals and take riding lessons. Young horses can be very difficult to work with, and require a lot of skill. If you handle a young horse incorrectly the effects are hard to get rid of, buying an older horse that has been trained well will be alot more fun, I can promise that.
If you decide that a foal is the right choice for you get one that is from a reputable breeder. Make sure it is registered. Unregistered horses are harder to sell because there is no gaurentee of their age, and bloodlines. Bloodlines give you information regarding what they will turn out to be like and genetic disorders they may have. If you choose a quarter horse be aware that if it is Impressive bred you need to make sure it has been tested for HYPP and is negative. If you get a horse out of a stallion called Redeemer, there is a very high chance it will turn out to have a hot temper and vicious streak when it is a bit older. This is why it is important to research bloodlines when buying a foal.
Ask the breeder/seller information about the foals history, how much handeling it has had and what type. Make sure it has at least had a halter and lead on. Ask if the foal has been imprinted, a good imprinting job will make the horse siginificantly easier to handle. Look at the foals conformation. Ask if the foal has ever been injured, be aware of any scars or marks on its body that look like old injuries, this can cause you problems later in life.
Foals are cute, but buying one is risky and requires a great ammount of skill to raise the animal to be what you want later in life. Buying a baby horse is not like buying a puppy or kitten, you are dealing with what will become a thousand pound animal.
