Blind Cash Gets His Last Milk

How much milk and how often does a foal need to be fed?

My mare had a foal Thursday morning and we can’t get it to nurse from the mare. It will eat from a bottle and we feed it as much as it will eat every two hours. The mare has plenty of milk so we aren’t having to use milk replacer yet. How much milk does the baby need as it grows? I know that she needs to be fed every two hours now but when can I wait longer between feedings? If anyone know how to get her to take the mare’s teet any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

the foal really should nurse from the mare, it’s healthier for it to interact with it’s mother i think.

i think you should talk to your vet because they will know more about your foal’s specific needs and such. they also might know how to get it to start nursing from it’s mother, too.

good luck, sorry i couldn’t be more help.
