foal handling
Foal Questions! important?

i have a few day old colt and a 2 1/2month old colt.
i want to know how to halter break the older colt
i also want to know what i should do to imprint and make the new colt a lot more friendly since the other colt wasn’t handled as much.

also when should i start working with them, how and when should i geld them
also any other useful info on foals would be great!
thanks.

i don’t have a stall and the older foal is out to pasture with mom 24/7
and the young baby is in the quarantine paddock with plenty of hay.
thanks again
mother is full mustang, very wild and keeps to her self. the other horses dislike her and we are atempting to work with her the best we can. where should i go about getting help to lead break ext the babies? i hold the baby until it stops struggling and occasionally it follows me around then goes back to mom. is this ok? is this good? thanks! your helping alot!

At my barn we wean the foals at 4-5 months. To halter break we put well fit leather baby halters on them and leave them on for their pasture time, a lot of people say that will leave grooves in the horses face but we’ve never had that happen. To make them friendlier simply spend more sweet time with them, pet them, scratch their itchy spots, whatever, let them know you aren’t dangerous. We geld them not long after weaning, just make sure both testicles have dropped. You can start doing basic things like leading and brushing now, just keep everything light. You don’t start doing serious work with a horse until it is at least 2, 3 is the preferred age to start really riding them.
